For an old man well into his 70's my Father moves surprisingly fast and
quietly, his eldest Grandaughter has a new nickname for him 'Ninja Grandad'.

A couple of weeks ago I rang Dad to ask him if he could take some accumulated
rubbish to the tip for me, after it was all gathered up there was about
six of those big orange garden waste rubbish bags, a few smaller of the
green ones and several old and decomposing boxes.

Dad called me and said he would be there on the saturday morning between 9-10, so
we were all up earlyish(for a saturday) ready and waiting to help him haul the bags
from near the gate to the back of his car.

Around 9.30 ish my friend went to the toilet and on his way back looked out the
window, he came back in and said that either someone had stolen all our rubbish
or that my Dad had been and gone.

We didn't even HEAR anything at all, he didn't come and knock on the door, didn't
toot the horn, made NO noise heaving all those heavy bags around, I texted him and
told him that his Grandaughter was peeved because she was all ready to go with him
to the tip and help him carry the bags, and that she now called him "Ninja Grandad".

I think that tickled his funny bone a bit, but seriously, how does one somewhat
eldery man with a dicky knee and a dodgy hernia heave all those bags without making
even the slightest noise?

He said that he wasn't sure if we were awake or not, so he didn't want to disturb us!

Now I am somewhat amused, bemused and slightly worried, my sister is getting a new car
so she is giving Dad her old one, and he decided that he would give us his old one, it's
nothing spectacular, but it runs. Everytime I hear a car now I look out the window and
wonder if I'm going to see my Ninja Dad stealthily driving a car into our driveway
and then just as stealthily departing, rather like the tooth fairy, or in his case the
Ninja Car Dad Fairy.

Well that was fun, I think.

I got to meet a cousin from my dads side of the family, she looks a lot like my Sister, though I'm not sure my sister will appreciate that comparison, found out more about the wonderful man we're all descended from, found out about the mess of convicts that we also apparantly have in our family line, found out that names William, Joseph and Alfred are indeed family names stretching ALLLLLL the way back to around the 1300's, nothing like keeping the tradition alive, I apparantly have some cousins called William, Joseph and Alfred *grin*.

Well it made my father happy and it doesn't hurt to be nice, thats what I say.

My Father rang me on thursday, to see how I was an stuff, and to tell me that my Aunt Judy had gotten married again, in JANUARY, he was a little bit peeved that no one had bothered to let us know, I would have sent a card, but sadly ever since my Nan died, I haven't seen my Aunts or cousins at all, I invited them all to come around over Christmas, but no one turned up, I find that very sad.

However we were talking about bits and pieces and he asked me how my studies were going, I said that I'd had to do six assignments, and I passed five and had to resubmit the sixth, but that it was about Pavlov and Skinner and conditioning, subjects which make my brain want to crawl out my ears with BOREDOM.. which is probably why I failed that part (grin).

And he said, out of the blue that he 'was sure that I'd manage it because I was always the smart one of the family'.

Wow

That was the first compliment I can ever remember my father giving me.

Of course it would have been nicer 35 odd years ago when I desperately wanted him to approve of me and to say something, ANYTHING, nice about me.

Better late than never I guess.

And he said he loved me again.

The apocalypse is approaching.

Yesterday, I had one of the clearest flashbacks I have ever had in my life, it was rather funny, I was thinking about how soon [livejournal.com profile] elven_sorceress will be turning eighteen, and I could remember as a conversation I had with my cousin Colleen, as if it was JUST yesterday.

We were walking down Tottenham Rd, on our way to the Brighton Council Chambers, to get her little boy, Ryan, and [livejournal.com profile] elven_sorceress vaccinated, this would make it early 1989, Ryan was due to start school in March and needed to have his booster shots and [livejournal.com profile] elven_sorceress needed her third shot of something or other.

When I was growing up I was very close to my cousin Colleen and her brothers, we used to play some bizzare pretend game at my Nans, and she was a princess and her brother was a dog, and we, my sister and I were fairies or something, all I know is that it was a great deal of fun, and we were all close.

Then we all started high school and we were too old for all of that, so we drifted apart, and by the time she ended up having Ryan, when she was eighteen, we had hardly talked for years, but circumstances change, and all three of us, Me, my sister and Colleen, ended up living in the same 'low income' housing department area.

As we were walking, the conversation turned to where we thought we would be by the time our children started high school, Colleen wanted to be back living in S.A with a nice house, a good job and no money worries, with Ryan and her partner Allan. Me, well I had trouble thinking that far into the future, and beyond some fluffy-bunny plans of maybe owning a house somewhere else other than Gagebrook, having perhaps another one or two children, and being with Leon, I didn't really know.

There was some half formulated plan about finishing up my Diploma in working with Disabled People and getting a job in one of the ATCs, or Respite care centres, maybe do a BA in Welfare, but nothing concrete, beyond giving my kids a good loving home.

As it turned out, Colleen was the only one who got anything even remotely like she wanted, by '97 she was living back in S.A, and she did own her own house, she owned two actually, only she wasn't together with her partner Allan anymore, I haven't seen Colleen since just before she left, she didn't make it back in '99 for my Mums funeral, nor in '03 for my Nans, so all I hear is bits and pieces from her Mum, my Aunty Lesley.

By the year [livejournal.com profile] elven_sorceress started high school, well I was no where near what I had hoped to come true for us, divorced, being a sole parent, mourning the devestating loss of my best friend, my Mum, without an idea of what I was supposed to be or do.

And the funny thing? Well in my family, *I* was considered to be the bright one, the one who would do things, get places, be something, the general consensus was that Colleen would end up where I am today, struggling.

Such delicious irony.

The power was off today from 8.30 until just on 4pm, the Hydro were restringing power poles, one of the nice things about the power being off, was the total and utter silence in the house, both [livejournal.com profile] elven_sorceress and doobie went out, so there was just me and the cats, there was no background hum from the fridge, no noise of the computer, no lights from the router/modem, nothing.

Just total and utter silence, it was VERY refreshing, I was productive, I did assigment Five and most of Assignment Six, I communed with the cats, and when [livejournal.com profile] elven_sorceress and doobie both got home, we sat around talking and laughing, it was great, I love my kids heaps, sometimes they seem to be growing up too fast and getting further away, doobie will be Fifteen next month, and [livejournal.com profile] elven_sorceress will be Eighteen in four months time, so it was nice to connect with both of them at the same time.

My youngest, for reasons best known to herself has decided to walk to school of a morning, and thats about an hours walk, at the pace she goes, so that means she leaves around 6.40am each morning, so she's awake around 5.45 each morning, and even though she tries to be quiet, I usually get woken up by her, which has turned into a blessing, because she most mornings has about twenty minutes spare, before she leaves, she's taken to coming and talking to me.

We have some great conversations, which is very good, because usually getting words out of her when she gets home from school is almost impossible, she comes in the door, grabs the phone and dissapears into her bedroom, unless she wants something,so I'm actually enjoying being woken up early, it's nice to have a connection with her again.

I never have a problem yakking to [livejournal.com profile] elven_sorceress, i like to make her blush, and thats a great deal of fun.

Well, thats finally all settled, some months ago Dhanica announced that she didn't want to stay at Lambert next year, and that she refused to go to Cosgrove (not that I blame her, its not got the best rep, however it is the local feeder High school) so that meant I had to chase around all the other High Schools in the area and out of it, to find one that would take her.

Her first choice was totally full up and had a waiting list, same with the next choice, which was an all girls school, her third choice was Claremont High, who originally said they would take her, and then um'ed and ah'ed for a couple of months, which meant of course I had to scramble around looking for more schools, by now I was really reaching, a HS on the other side of the river, one four suburbs away, thankfully Claremont High have now got their act together and she has been offered a place.

And now of course Dhanica isn't happy about it, she wanted to go to the school who had the waiting list, even though they told me that we didn't fit into their out of area definitions and that even if they had a place they probably wouldn't have offered her a place anyway, then she said she wanted to go to the one over the river, they just rang this morning and said that they also had waiting list and were not offering out of area placements anyway.

So she pouted about that, and I told her that she was the one who wanted to leave Lambert in the first place, and she just gave me that blank look, the same one she uses when I ask her to do something for me, like last week, I asked her to hang some clothes up, and she said 'why should I do something for you, when you dont do anything for me'. Of course I never do anything, I havent been chasing schools down for the last 4 months, I didn't just buy her a new mobile phone, I never pay for bus fares when she wants to go somewhere, I never buy her new clothes, and the list goes on.

But anyway, its all sorted, so now I have to fix up her bus pass, start putting the money aside for her school uniforms and the school levies.

Had a phone call today, from my Aunty Lesley, wishing me a happy birthday, so she's two days early, but at least she remembers what month I was born in. Getting calls from Lesley is always a double edged sword though, of all of my Aunts she is the one who sounds the most like my Mum, if someone else answers the phone and I'm told its Lesely, for me, I have time to prepare for that little immediate 'shock' I get when she says 'hello love'. But if I answer the phone and she goes 'hello love' without warning, I usually almost have to bite my lip to stop from crying.

So I get a whole load of family gossip, my oldest Aunt, Dawn is not well, finds it hard to get around now, has momemts when her mind and memory wander, and thats when I really realise that all the people I love are getting old, Dawn is 72 now, in my minds eye she's always around 40, and thats how I think of her. Lesley just turned 62, and I realise that my Mum would have been 70 next year.
