boodie: shark with human teeth (Default)
[personal profile] boodie
I wrote this some years ago, from the sound of it when i was doing my BA at Monash Uni.

This is in essence a respite from too much studying, from grasping with the
differences between Functionalist,Conflict and Interactionalist societies and
the subtle nuances between qualitative and quantitative methods of research,
empirical and non empirical, subjective, objective, materialistic and
idealistic tendecies, Durkheim, Weber and Marx. One essay on perception and
another on comparative differenced between Willis and Sargent and their
definitions of society, to something closer to the nitty gritty of life, the
central core of a good session of washing clothes.

To the thorny question of laundry detergents.

In my attempts to save money when going shopping I am often drawn by the El
Cheapo brands of Washing Powder, that the supermarket has arranged tastefully
at eye level, complete with atttractive prices, one such product was called
Bushland, it claimed to have no added phosphors, no extra nasty bits and the
carton was made of recycled paper, feeling that I had done my bit towards
saving the environment and helping the economy by buying an Oz made detergent
it went into the trolley.

It does as much as I expected from something that cheap, it washes the clothes
with some degree of efficacy, when I brought it in passing I wondered why it
was called Bushland, something to appeal to the Greenie in us all??

Not so.

It's called Bushland because THATS what in the detergent, this morning as I
was doing the washing I scooped out some detergent and with amazement noticed
that there were bits of bark and leaves in with the detergent, feeling a
rising sense of Attenborough like zeal I scooped more out, what else would be
in the packet, a Koala, a lizard, even though I dug down to the bottom of the
packet I only found some more bark, leaves and what looked like half a gumnut.
For a while there I thought I may have been on the track of what happened to
the Tasmanian Tiger, stumbled inadvertently onto what might have been the
conspiracy of the century, the real truth about the extinction of the Tiger
and the degradation of the Australian bushland.

But it was not to be, then I realised that I was staring full in the face the
realisation of another common goal of all Australian people, TRUTH IN
ADVERTISING.. The detergent said Bushland, and THATS what I got, so my search
wasnt totally wasted.

Then I got to thinking, what if lurking in other boxes of detergent, the well
known brands, was also truth in advertising.

In every box of Drive: Greg Norman teeing off from the first at St Andrews?

In every box of Radiant: A stainless steel trough?

In every box of Fab: One half of Milli Vanilli?

In every box of Surf: A tidal wave waiting to escape, or perhaps an internet
Subscription to MSN.

The list is endless and very frightening.

Too much study is my problem.
