Go to "Modify Journal" the layout style you are looking for is called "Disjointed". You can use some of the default colors under the color theme or with the help of a program like PaintShop Pro or even FrontPage, you can figure out the HTML language for specific colors.
You can also pay for your LJ, its really not that expensive! Paypal or their new pay systems are kewl and easy to use, then you can go and create your own style, like I did, see, I started with disjointed but alas, it looked very plain so I got a webmaster I know to help me, guess what, now my LJ looks kewl!
