Ok.. it wont unzip/unrar or install any files sent over the network, or downloaded from the web..

BUT it will do it if they're taken from a cd...

Pretty odd for sure.
I'm thinking back to a time when I had CDROM problems. It would not install anything properly. Kept saying there were corrupted cab files and such randomly thru the disc. Install it on another system and its fine.
Turned out that one of my RAM sticks had gone bad. With it replaced, everything was back to normal.
Might want to consider checking the RAM. Especially if you have more than one stick in the system. Remove them individually and see how the system behaves.
Just a thought for the moment.

we're thinking the guru and I that its a fault in the inbuilt network card thats corrupting the files.

somehow.. seems strange that the ssem files will work when copied from a cd.
