I spent the afternoon down at my Nans', my Aunty Lesley and Judy were waiting for my Aunty Dawn to make it down from Zeehan, which is a 4.5 to 5 hour drive away, so that Nanny was still in her bed, and I got to say goodbye, she looked so peaceful.

Some of the most enduring memories of my childhood revolve around time spent at my Nans' one of the highlights were the times that Nanny used to babysit my Sister and I, she had these high old beds with kapok filled mattresses and scratchy grey woollen blankets, with hand stitched blanket stitch edging, and the most divine smelling irish linen sheets, that were so heavy, that in the middle of winter once you warmed the bed up, you were toasty for the whole night.

In the morning we were woken up by Nanny with toast made in one of those old fashioned pull down sides toasters, with real butter and vegemite and hot milky tea. Nanny always had home made biscuits and cakes on hand, and her raspberry jam coconut slice.

Sunday lunches down at Nannys were always great, there was the main big table and us little ones had a seperate table to sit at, we'd have a roast of some sort, with potatoes and pumpkin, numerous vegies, and Nannys hand made gravy, followed by her own handmade vanilla icecream.

After lunch we would be shoved out the door until afternoon tea time, and we were allowed to play and do anything, millions of games of hide and seek, hiding under the back stairs, in the woodshed, under the massive fuschia bush, in the front porch, or even if we were daring, in the back porch, behind the back door, which if we were caught by an adult earned us a clip around the ear and swift kick in the bum on the way back out.

Nanny always had lots of cats and kittens and we were always begging Mum to be allowed to take a kitty home "PLEEEASSSEEE" that only worked the once and we returned home with a small bundle of tortiseshell fluff called Big Cat.

Family get togethers were always held at Nannys, and Nanny seemed to never mind having to cater to what seemed like hundreds of people, everything was held at Nannys, we always went back to Nannys when someone died, now it seems strange that this is the last time we'll be going back to Nannys, the house is to be sold and another piece of my childhood will be lost forever.

Nanny had gone down hill very quickly the last 3 days, and I think the news last night that her Dr had finally agreed with my Aunts that it was time that Nanny was assessed for her suitability for a nursing home, when she heard that she decided that now was her time to go, and she went the way she wanted, in her own bed and asleep.

I will love you forever Nanny, always in my heart.
