The house next door to me is up for sale, they want $140,000 for a bog standard 3 bedroom house, much the same age as this one, it's nothing special, I've been in it, $140,000...
At this rate I'll never be able to afford to buy a house, I worked it out the largest I could possibly hope to be able to borrow is a max of 100K.. and even that is a bit a stretch, so maybe 90k tops, any more and i'd be stretched too far.
You cant find a decent house for that much money, it wasn't that long ago, thats $140K would have brought me two decent houses in nice suburbs.
Added on top of this was the news that housing affordability in Tasmania has fallen to a new low of 33%, and that the amount of a persons weekly wages required to service housing debt has risen, and we're not talking massive 1/2 mill mortgages like they have in Melbourne and Sydney, we're talking about 150k tops mortgages, on average.
*sigh*

Date: 2003-11-28 01:58 am (UTC)How about a unit or a townhouse ?
Two bedrooms ?
Despite people taking out large mortgages in the Sydney area this townhouse cost me $77,500 back in 1996. It's value would have doubled in that time.
The truth is that prices are as low as they're going to be.
When I look at Tasmanian real estate prices on the net I find (outside Hobart) properties below $50,000.
This townhouse isn't a mansion (in fact it's a bit wobbly around the edges) but it keeps the rain off my head :-)

Its coming, maybe not this year, but soon damnit! Everyone says so...
Of course on the other everyone seems to think interest rates are only going to go up...
