No, that was legalising gay sex, and nobody said sex had to be about love either.
Legalising gay marriage is about recongising that two people who choose to live together and support each other and share everything are entitled to be treated as a single unit.
Marriage doesn't facilitate love. It facilitates living for two people in an imperfect world (in the perfect world, she wouldn't have to worry about feeding both of us or taxes or custody of children).
If I choose to live with someone and support her and et cetera, I can marry her even if I don't love her and we don't sleep together and both of us have someone else to go to when feeling lonely. Friendship isn't love. Love isn't friendship, either.
The UK got it almost right when they called gay marriage a 'civil union': Marriage is about mutual commitment, a 'civil union' is about mutual support. Now we just have to wait until the law calls all marriage a 'union', and leaves 'marriage' to churches.
What happens if my religion involves living with 10 other people and wild sex parties? Hmmmmm...
