I feel rather proud that I have read an awful lot of these books...

100 most frequently challenged books of 1990-2000 American Library Association

I'm suprised, Huckleberry Finn is in the top ten of frequently challenged books???

and To kill a mocking bird is there also? that's a shame, a damn shame indeed

I suspect Huck Finn is there because of its portrayal of black people, and Mockingbird the same thing.

Actually, moreso the "N" word being in them. Yeah...it's a word I cannot stand...however the time period the stories take place, and/or when written, it was common use (not necessarily acceptable, true). I think it's stupid that people want to change these things. It's, IMO, the same as trying to change history.

Sadly, though, this has gone on for centuries. Grim's tales are notorious for taking oral tradition, and homogonizing the stories to make them entertaining. They were entertaining, originally, but they were also valuable life lessons, as well...and not nearly as "Happily Ever After" as Grim made them.

I agree, i dislike the word to, but in the context of the time they were written, its like Little Black Sambo, or Enid Blyton and her Golliwogs..

its stupid and pointless, you use them as benchmark to show how far ON it's moved.

"Scary Stories" by Alvin Schwartz is NUMBER ONE?! They're probably shocked by all the suberb illustrations in the book. Though I was scared half to death long ago after hearing the story "The Thing". I had to go down a dark street at 10 at night to get home, and my mind created images of the zombie in the white tuxedo. So I thought it was following me and I raced home very quickly. But I like the books now. I have all three of his books somewhere.

I can't believe "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is #3!!! Un-freaking-believable!

I've read, tops, eight of the books on those list. Go me.

Well, forty-six if you count all the Goosebumps books I've read. But that's a series, so.
