Interesting that you have chosen a school like that for our children.

Date: 2004-10-07 02:04 pm (UTC)The children do spend a great amount of time in unstructured multi grade groups without enough desks to sit at teaching themselves or other students. On their last visit one of the children complained about not having the slightest idea about what was happening in her maths class because she missed the first 2 days of the unit about 3 weeks before. Comments to the teacher achieved nothing. We went over the basics with her and she seemed to be getting it.
The timetable is written up on a white board, is changed weekly and is subject to change on a daily basis. The subject "Wilma" where the content is found out when you arrive is an interesting way of doing it. This class ended up being spread across 3 rooms with one teacher.
Time spent in the "Reading" class was interesting - it seemed to be about finding ways of reading notes passed to each other without the teacher seeing (it was easy when the teacher left the room).
I'm sure it works ok for some, but I'm not sure it works for our children.
