Tonight I am profoundly grieving over this, Massive fire guts historic Myer dept store in Hobart. I was stunned at first when the news flash came through and then later on through the night and further updates as the full extent of the damage was known, I was shocked and saddened, I didn't realise at first how upset I was until they showed a picture of the sillhouette of the facade, with the empty shell behind and lit up with fire, and then I realised I was crying.

I don't care if anyone thinks I am stupid to cry over a building, Myer has always been there, there has never been a time when Myer have not been in that building, for a very long time Myer was the only dept store in Hobart, whole generations starting from the 1830's have shopped at Myers. Shopping at Myer is inextricably linked to my childhood, every christmas school holidays Mum would take us to town, we'd take the car to the train station, catch the train into town and then Mum would buy our back to school stuff, new shoes from Burrells, uniforms from Connors, and if we had been really bad, lunch would be at Coles, middling to ok, lunch woiuld be at Fitzgeralds and if we'd been REALLY good, we would have lunch at the posh cafe on the basement level of Myer.

Toasted ham sandwiches and a milkshake, nothing tasted better than the lunch from Myer.

My heart goes out to all the workers and shop owners, this is nothing short of a disaster, a cultural and financial disaster.

If you had been "really bad" lunch would be at Coles ! I would have thought that if you had been "really bad" you'd have to go without lunch. I don't know that Coles food is all that bad. On my one short visit to Tasmania I ate at Coles in Launceston. I ranked it fairly highly on my list of memories along with a very brief lunch durng a very short (very short) stopover in Winnipeg Canada. In my estimation Launceston is far superior to Winnipeg Manitoba.

It's now Coles/Myer I believe. The Myer store in Sydney is "very very" posh. Perhaps someone has decided that the "olde olde" look has had it's day although I have mixed feelings about the plethora of antiseptic shopping centres popping up all over the place.

Tassie has character and charm. So does Sydney to some degree but that charm has deteriorated to quite a degree over the years even if "services" have improved.

I have $8 to last me this week. I might invest in a toasted ham sandwich although that will involve a walk to St. Marys.

Trevor in Cornwall England ( a cat person like my late brother ) has sent me the following cat related link. It may alleviate your frustration to some degree.

Sliding scale based on price not quality, lunch at Coles was quite good, they made spiders, but the food was cheaper and the surroundings a whole lot noisier, the cafeteria at Coles was very large.. The posh cafe at Myer was nice and small, even if sometimes there was a queue.

I think my Mum liked the surroundings more.

I sincerely hope it wasn't arson that would be terrible..

But, but... that store was awful.
Of all the department stores I've been to, that was the most difficult to get around. I can see where there'd be memories for you, but for a Northern Tassie boy like me, I loathed entering that shop.

Well yes, it was a hodge-podge, most dept stores of that design and age are, personally I loathed Fitzies, they could never keep the floor layout the same from one month to the next.
