The electricity bill arrived today, $433.00. I have no idea how I am going to pay it. I don't know what else we can do to use even less power. We went without heating again for 90% of this winter, we only wash 2-3 times a week, we use the tumble dryer sparingly. The oven doesn't get used a lot. Nobody has excessively long showers. I'm stumped and they say electricity will be going up again in November.

Call the electric company about the bill (though they helpfully like to raise rates in summer with "peak usage hours"). They should have a program to help families pay the bill, though. Good luck.

They are quite used to me by now, paying by installments is something I do quite a lot with them, according to the paper about 20% of electricity users in Tasmania have payment plans with the electricity company, that tells you something about the cost of power down here.

Good grief, just read the rest of the comments. That is just obscene, they're not even that bad out here when they're feeling their most "hurr Callyfornians R RICH!!!" ...A used exercise bike, a power take off, a generator and a set of batteries?

Our electric bills are sometimes quite odd, then it turns out there was some period when they didn't really read the meter, just made some sort of estimate. Then when they do come and read, there's a big correction/jump.

Unfortunately no, they read my meter regularly, I hear them and they kindly let me know the day before that they are coming, so I get all the fun of impending doom until the bill arrives.

seems a bit excessive, have you though about getting one of those inspections and the free monitor, something maybe earthing and eating your electricity, or just plain wrong!

Oh the wiring in this place sucks, but we cant do anything about that, light bulbs, even the expensive green ones never last long here, but apart from that, the wiring is 'suitable' ie it wont kill anyone, but it's not efficient.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the price of electricity in Tasmania is obscene.

*sigh* yeah, it's gone up 43% in the last 18 months and we have another rise due later this year.

We simply don't have enough dams generating power thanks to the Greens putting the kibosh on any new dams.

And of course the hydro is also partly to blame, by not spending money on upgrading stuff until it breaks down.
