royal weddings BAH
May. 14th, 2004 01:39 pmYou know whats really annoyed me lately, is the fawning over in the press of Mary Donaldson, so she's marying the scion of one of the minor monarchies of Europe, so what. Shouldn't we be beyond all of this now, perhaps if Mary was marrying into the emotionally fractured and damaged Windsor royal family of England, I could understand the fuss, seeing as how Australia can't quite seem to be able to ween itself off the dependence on the chinless wonders that are the British royal family.
But since it's only Prince Frederik, who seems to be a nice enough young man, but whose family are hardly what you'd call top flight royalty, all this slavish attention to the minutae of the wedding, AND broadcasting it on three channels, is this really the actions of a society that is supposed to be egalatarian, I think not.
So she's a tassie girl who won the heart of a Prince, big deal, I wish them well, but do they deserve the endless newspaper/tv/media coverage they're getting?. The answer is a resounding no, in the immortal words of Garfield.
BIG FAT HAIRY DEAL.

Date: 2004-05-13 08:58 pm (UTC)Driven Diana off the front cover of all the women's magazines!
not that it's a brilliant thing (Diana's been dead now for what? over ten years? and she STILL gets on the cover of magazines?).. but geeze, I wish the australian media would just Get Over Themselves, sheesh.

Date: 2004-05-13 11:04 pm (UTC)I think it's fantastic news and an absolutely wonderful love story.
Look what else is in the news lately. Decapitations. Prisoner abuse. Thank God for the royal wedding: there's at least one shred of good news to cling onto.

Date: 2004-05-13 11:22 pm (UTC)Iraq burns, viruses get more virulent, politicans lie to us daily and human rights are violated by supposed 'saviors'.
BIG DEAL. I agree with you. I dont give a shit about the whole thing. There are things of vast more import than who marries who. Gotta love australian media priorites.
Its only saving grace is that its a nice love story. good for them, and at least the Prince doesnt seem to act like a stuck up prick.
worth maybe a short column in the social papers...and thats it.

And Denmark despite it's size (miniscule) is richer than Australia as measured in Gross Domestic Product than Aussie with it's extensive mineral wealth.
Australia NEEDS a monarchy. I suggest we lobby for a palace to be built in Hobart and for that Tasmanian lady's kids and urchins to become the next Australian monarch.
