I was watching Parky tonight (Michael Parkinson, the worlds best interviewer) and he had Lauren Bacall on, she made him blush when she flirted with him, she is what i would call a true STAR and even a legend of hollywood, she mentioned all these names, names to conjure with, names like Bogart, and Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Fred Astaire, REAL stars, proper stars.

The word STAR is bandied around FAR to often these days, I would go so far as to say there are very few REAL stars in hollywood these days, it seems that you only have to make one movie that does reasonably well and all of a sudden you're a star, thats bullshit, theres a lot more to being a star than acting in a few movies, real stars have a presence that extends beyond their movies...

And there is not many of those anymore.

It's all a load of tripe, the "stardom" concept bandied around by the media. A fair few do have charisma, yes, but those who do, and the majority who don't... how can they be called 'stars'? Hell, they're just people who get paid a lot to do as they're told.. kinda sad, really.

I agree, the amount of money they get paid is obscene, for what they do.

its a sad reflection

I wasn't joking. I'm just an ill-educated teenager :P

I did the Google search. It's not really surprising that I don't know who she is as the only film I've seen with her in is Misery, and that was a long time ago, and I can't picture any female characters other than Kathy Bates.

true, she was a LONG time before you were born, but she's been busy fairly recently, she was in Dogville, and Birth.. two reasonably controversial movies.

Boodie has turned into an m&m. Melts in your mouth, not in your hands. Or something.

I couldn't agree more!! I've been trying to think of someone (other than the greats) that could be branded with true stardom qualities and I have come up a blank. Well, with the exception of maybe Cate Blanchett. But I just love her, so there could be a bias there.

*grin*

the only ones i could think of were

Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Meryl Streep, and that was about it...

I'd definitely agree with Hopkins and Freeman. Don't know enough about the others to say. Personally I think Johny Depp is one of the great actors around today, but he needs a few more years on him till he can be a 'star' :P

i'd agree, he is a fine fine actor, very versatile, but needs a few more years.

mm, my definition of a star would be someone who can stand the test of time and still remain a performer/entertainer that many can admire.

one hit wonders don't count, though that's not to say that they didn't have the potential to be a star.

this is true, but they have one movie and all of sudden they're a 'star' and that aint so.
