As many of you know, since I had to move middle of last year from my home of thirteen years into a house where the rent was almost double what I was previously paying, money has been very tight, at the end of most months I am lucky if I have a positive balance of $5 in my bank account.

I am a qualified proofreader/editor and a fully qualified counsellor and I need more work, I have some but it is not enough, I am studying to update my counselling qualifications, so I am on Austudy at the moment, I need more proofreading work, my rates are cheap/reasonable depending on the service required; I can provide anything from basic proofreading right up to substantive editing.

So if anyone needs the services of a proofreader, or knows of anyone who needs one, please get in touch with me, this is getting more and more urgent, I am never going to be able to get ahead if I only just barely break even each month.

My washing machine broke down last month, I can't afford to even get someone to come and look at it and see if it's really borked, and if it is I can't replace it, I need to find money from somewhere to buy wood so we can be warm this winter.

I really need some work.

I only had two weeks work last year (2007) and I turned to NEIS (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme). This may or may not be for you but the bottom line is that I now have a company, a bank account for the company, a com.au domain with currently empty webspace, a Certificate IV in Small Business Management (completed in 6 weeks full time rather than 6 months full time at TAFE) and a business plan (completed as part of the course) and now I have to keep to it.

The bottom line is that if you have a business idea they help as best they can to put it into reality providing training in marketing, record keeping and operations.

If you are "in business" then you should be able to register a business name in Tasmania (if not a company), register for an ABN and set up a .com.au website where you can sell your proofreading and counselling skills.

NEIS training is strong on the marketing side of things so I have learned a few things about marketing and selling techniques.

I don't know if that helps in any way as we are in different situations. I have a roof over my head and don't pay rent but provided you operate a home based business you should be able to register a business name (it costs $142 in New South Wales) obtain an ABN and set up website related to the home business you seek to operate.

My com.au domain name has just been registered (using Mr Site - get it from Dick Smith or JB HiFi for about $99). It comes with shopping carts, email and other stuff and you don't have to be a whizzbang web developer.

I know I'm not !

I have had an ABN for several years, it covers both my areas of expertise, and I have a domain name and web site, which is in the process of being setup, what I need to do is advertise, but thats something I just don't have the money for.

I can't do any more studying until I finish this course I'm doing now which wont be until feb next year.
