food (and get off my lawn you kids!)

boodieWhen I was a kid the meat of choice in our very poor household was lamb; because lamb/mutton was cheap, you could do a lot of things with it, lamb chops, lamb ragout, roast lamb, and best of of all, after the saturday night roast, the left over lamb went into Mum's mincer along with carrots, onions, wiccy sauce, tomato sauce, salt and pepper and got turned into the absolutely yummy base for Shepherds Pie for dinner on sunday night.
Next on the list was corned beef/silverside we had that a lot because it was also dirt cheap and went a long way, and leftover got turned into corned beef hash or fritterbatters which was Mum's version of Bubble and Squeak, served with mash, cauliflower and butter beans, then would come pork, pork would be a treat, and Mum would make the most amazing crackling, along with home made apple sauce, and the requisite roast potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cauliflower and butter beans (they were the only sort of beans I would eat).
Steak and Beef were a rare occurance because beef was so expensive compared to lamb and silverside, the only time we had mince was when Mum made rissoles and proper home made gravy, with onions in it, the one meat we never ate that much of when I was kid was Chicken, because it was so very very expensive and a definite special occasion treat, unless we got one from the people over the road who had chooks and sometimes killed a few for dinner, that was always nice, and the smell of roasting chicken was something to be savoured.
The reason this is on my mind is that shopping was done this morning and I realise that now Chicken is the cheapest meat, and it's my go to meat of choice for things like curries, stirfrys and risottos, pork is very rare meat choice, and the same with beef, steak is perhaps a once/twice a year thing, and cheap mince is now my staple for so many things, spag bol, shepherds pie, pot luck, hamburgers, and I don't even want to think about which part of the cow the cheap mince comes from.
It just seems funny that now Chicken is the cheap meat and the price of Lamb is so far off my radar that I don't even bother looking at it when shopping, personally I'd love a lamb roast, but I don't think I'm willing to hand over my kidney on the black market to pay for the privilege.
