God yes, as an adjunct to PARENTS teaching it at home, I'm sick of PARENTS who seem to want to push all the stuff that PARENTS should be teaching their kids onto the schools and then bloody well complaining when the teachers don't have enough time to be TEACHERS as well as replacement PARENTS.
We don't pay teachers enough for that shit.

Date: 2011-03-28 07:56 am (UTC)A school and some doctors recommended to my friend that she starts reading books to her son at home to get him prepared for kindergarten.
She was bitching to me and said "isn't that the schools job?"
How can parents not want to teach their children? *Sigh*

Date: 2011-03-29 12:44 am (UTC)It's not that hard to teach kids to read, that's how I taught mine, I read to them from the time they were babies, and they had favourite books and soon learned to recognise words, and once they started to do that, it's not a BIG step to reading for themselves.
All it takes is 10-15 minutes a day of quiet reading time while they're young.
Next thing we'll be hearing that kids are turning up to kindy still in nappies because after all the teachers have nothing better to do with their time than toilet train YOUR child.
