According to a poll of BBC listeners THIS is the 100 top Number 1 singles of the last 50 years..

and aside from Kylie, nothing released (originally) in the last 4-5 years has made it... no bloody wonder, for the most part the mid to late 90's were totally devoid of anything remotely resembling GOOD music.

I disagree, I rather like a lot of music of the last 4-5 years, as it is the stuff I've grown up with. It's all to do with perspective you see. Of course, I also like a lot of earlier stuff, from the 80s and early 90s.

Pop culture in the last 5 years has taken a tragic nosedive as far as music is concerned. The 80's and early 90's had a few shining moments but was also majorly crap. The best music, in my opinion, came from the late 60's through 70's and somewhat early 80's period. INXS, David Bowie (listening to it now), Rolling stones, KISS etc. Now this is great music!
The more popular recent music is pretty much crap but that's not to say that there hasn't been some excellent bands... especially where indie music is concerned. Placebo, radiohead, the verve, silverchair, prodigy, smash mouth, jebidah... excellent fairly-recent music, in my opinion at least.

sorry, but I have to wonder what silverchair and smash mouth are doing in that list. Matter of opinion of course, but as I see (hear?) it, they very much don't belong.

Perhaps not smash mouth as much but Silverchair is an excellent band. The more widely known songs aren't as good as some of the ones that haven't been released individually. I'll agree that some of their stuff is overly-poppy but that doesn't negate the greatness of their other tracks.

In my opinion, there's some truth in that... frankly most of the problems start from too many cliches(sp?), like the apparent surge of "love songs" (which doesn't really go with pop). Usually I tend to ignore the fact of who's singing and/or the lyrics. (though I find that Kylie's song is a tad bit too hypnotic. Even if it IS supposed to be hypnotic in the first place. :p)

...And the wave of crap music continues.

I have yet to find a single band/singer with more than one song I really like. They're all one-hit wonders as far as I'm concerned.

Plus some no-hit wonders.
