I got this from Kaijima A Frostfang, this would have to be one of the best things I have ever read about what identity is.

I present to you the Declaration of Identity

We, the people, do hereby declare in this year of two thousand and three...

That the essential identity of a reasoning and thinking person is not defined exclusively by the physical characteristics of a person, accidental circumstances of birth, coincidence of genetic relations, or external definitions and descriptions imposed upon a person by the social and cultural context in which they may find themselves.

It has been determined...

That the essential identities of many persons, put forth in good faith, have been in the past and are currently, the target of intolerance, persecution, prejudice, scorn, uncivil behavior, and hatred on the grounds that: these identities conflict with the physical characteristics of a person; conflict with the social, cultural, intellectual or psychological expectations of person as put forth by society, organizations, and individuals; or conflict with the expectations of a person's peers. Where a given person's identity conflicts with these things yet performs no essential harm, and is subjected to intolerance, persecution, prejudice, scorn, uncivil behavior, and hatred, the most grave and serious injustice exists.

It has further been determined...

That under these conditions an unacceptable state of social and civil relations exists which hinders cooperation and coexistence of persons of various identities, and that the societies which exist outside of any one person's internal and intellectual identity are cheapened, harmed, and made less tolerable to inhabit by the denial of those very same personal, essential identities.

To these ends...

This Declaration of Identity does hereby put forth the assertion that a person's internal perception of their identity, as arising from their own thoughts, predilections, eccentricities, and beliefs has no less and in some circumstances more validity than external, biological, and social definitions and identifications. The right of a person to define, construct, and explore the identity of their choice is hearby declared to be a sacred and divine freedom of intelligent thought. The exercise of this right, so long as it does not impose on the freedoms and rights of others, is to be free from intolerance, persecution, prejudice, scorn, uncivil behavior, and hatred, as so shall be the essential identity of a reasoning and thinking person.

The undersigned, 2003ad
